Junior Zoo Keeper

We are now accepting applications for our teen volunteer program!


What does it take to be a Junior Zoo Keeper?

  • Have a passion for animals and nature, and a desire to take action for conservation of species and habitats
  • Be a student between 14 – 17 years of age (must be 14 by the application deadline of April 7)
  • Is willing to receive training, take direction well, be upbeat and share your passion for animals with others
  • Can commit to volunteering at least 4 hours per week throughout the summer

What does a Junior Zoo Keeper do?

  • Receives professional training on topics such as conservation, interpretation, public speaking, and learns a wide range of information about our animals and their behavior. 
  • Becomes a Zoo Naturalist to interpret in front of animal habitats with biofacts (skulls, pelts, teeth, claws...)
  • Assists with Zoo Camp and education programs
  • Keep our budgies safe while teaching people about these friendly birds in the Aviary
  • Helps with special events

We will host a Junior Zoo Keeper Information Session on Saturday, March 24 at 1pm in the Zoo Education Center for the 2018 program.  This is not required but is for interested candidates that would like to learn more about the program. Space is limited so please register HERE.

How do I apply to be a Junior Zoo Keeper?

Due Date: Submit your application and letter together to the Niabi Zoo Education Department no later than April 7

Selection Process

IMG_0967.JPGApplicants will receive an email for an interview scheduled on one of the following dates for a specific time that falls within the listed timeframe. Interviews will last approximately 20-30 minutes.  
  • Thursday, April 12, 5:00pm-7:00pm
  • Saturday, April 14, 12:00pm-3:00pm
  • Wednesday, April 18, 5:00pm-7:00pm
Program selection will be announced through email by April 24.

Program Fee

There is a fee to cover the purchase of the JZK uniform shirt and training costs. The fee for this program is $50 for Niabi Zoo Members and $60 for non-members and is due on the first day of training.  


All selected candidates are required to attend training sessions and should consider whether or not you are available before submitting your application. Alternative dates will not be offered. If you cannot attend training, unfortunately, you cannot be a Junior Zoo Keeper this year. The training dates are as follows:
  • Saturday, April 28, 12:00pm-4:00pm
  • Saturday, May 5, 12:00pm-4:00pm
  • Saturday, May 12, 12:00pm-4:00pm
  • Saturday, May 19, 12:00pm-4:00pm
