Animal Handler I


The Rock Island County Forest Preserve District has an immediate opportunity for an enthusiastic and experienced individual for the position of Animal Handler I (Zookeeper) at Niabi Zoo. This is a full-time, permanent position. Pay rate is $15.17 per hour with excellent benefits, which include health, vision, and dental insurance, retirement, paid holidays, paid personal days, vacation, and sick time.
 
The position performs a variety of responsible manual and maintenance duties in the care and treatment of a variety of exotic animal species in a county zoo. Incumbent performs daily husbandry duties, carefully observes animal behavior and appearance, assists in the provision of medical treatments of animals, performs general maintenance duties in the upkeep of animal enclosures and zoo grounds, and maintains detailed daily records. Animal training experience and the understanding of operant conditioning with exotic animals is a must. This position is under the general supervision of a Head Zookeeper, who reports to the Assistant Zoo Director – Animal Programs and the Zoo Director.
 
A four-year degree in Biology, Zoology, or a related field is required, supplemented by two or more years experience in the handling, care and conditioning of exotic animals in a zoo or aquarium setting. A Bachelors degree may be substituted with a minimum of four years of full time experience at an AZA accredited institution working as an animal handler/keeper. An appropriate valid driver’s license is required.
 
Niabi Zoo is a 50-acre zoo located in Coal Valley, IL. With an annual attendance of over 250,000, Niabi Zoo is one of the largest attractions in the area and the 3rd largest zoo in the state of Illinois. Niabi Zoo maintains an animal collection of approximately 330 individuals comprised of over 140 different species. Niabi Zoo is a dynamic and growing facility with a strong future.
